Gun Control Annotated Bibliography Essay Example For Students
Gun Control Annotated Bibliography Essay Presently in our nation, a controversy is shelling around the issue of gun control. Civilian ownership of firearms has for more than two hundred years been the very cornerstone upon which the liberty of the public has been supported. The very reason that Americans have never suffered a tyranny on the scale of Nazi-Germany has been due to the proliferation of firearms in the hands of the general public. The Second Amendment to the Bill of rights of the United States Constitution states A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. In order to understand that right, the modern reader must understand the semantics of the eighteenth century. The term Well Regulated meant well trained according to James Madison, the principle author of the Constitution. The term militia, according to the Militia Act of 1792, referred to all able-bodied male citizens. The meaning then of the Second Amendment i s made quite clear. It is meant to serve as a chain upon the government to prevent the infringement of government power upon the Civil Liberties of Americans. Further proof of this can be seen in a quote from George Madison. I ask, Sir, What is the Militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials. (George Madison, Three Elliot, Debates at 425-426). Richard Henry Lee, in his Additional Letters from the Federal Farmer of 1788 stated, A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves.and include all men capable of bearing arms.Title Ten section 331 of the U.S. code states The Militia of the United States consists of all able bodied men at least seventeen years of age.The founding fathers of the United States believed that government is a necessary evil. They wrote the Bill of Rights, as stated earlier, to serve as a chain, which would limit government power over its citizens. Civilian ownership of firearms would, in the founding fathers view, be the American Peoples liberty teeth. (George Washington). This is to say that, despite attempts by some hypothetical future government to impose a tyranny, the American people would be able to resist it without armed force. The same founding fathers had only thrown off the yoke of tyranny during the revolution. They knew full well the value of an armed citizenry in fighting off tyranny. The minutemen assembled at Lexington and Concord to prevent the Royal Fusiliers from seizing the munitions of the militia as General Gage had ordered (Order of General Gage, April 18,1775). Further proof of the original intent of the founding fathers can be seen in a quote from Thomas Jefferson. Experience hath shewn, that even under the best form of government those entrusted with power have, in time and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. (Thomas Jefferson, Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge-1788). George Washington stated, government is not reason; it is not eloquence, it is f orce! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a feraful master. In this quote, Washington summarized the mistrust that the founding fathers had in government. He realized that government could, like a fire, get out of control. Patrick Henry stated, Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approached that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined. The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun.Advocates of gun control state that control of firearms would prevent crime. This statement is flawed. According to the Uniform Crime Reports of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the cities with the highest crime rates are also the cities with the strictest gun control laws. (F.B.I. Uniform Crime Reports, 1994). In Washington D.C., it is almost impossible for a civilian to own firearms, yet it is universally seen as the murder capital of the United States . Vermont, a state where civilians do not need a license to carry firearms, has the best crime rate in the nation. Since Texas recently liberalized its concealed carry laws, crime rates have dropped 8.5 percent. Against Feminism essays
Against Feminism essays The other day I saw a very pregnant woman stand for close to an hour on a very crowded train. Not one person offered her a seat. And I thought - Is this what women are trying to achieve? If this is the equality weà ¡Ã ¯re looking for, then we better put on spacesuits, à ¡cause the road to hell is going to be flaming and quick. I am a female. Of course I am supportive of the womenà ¡Ã ¯s rights and gender equality. What I despise is being labeled or considered a part of some gender group. The word à ¡Ã °feministà ¡ annoys me. Ià ¡Ã ¯m a woman. Enough said. I know many women are going to hate me for saying this, but I see feminism as a lame excuse, and I believe this issue is backfiring. Thereà ¡Ã ¯s nothing wrong with trying to accomplish equality, respect and independence. But first of all, it is bizarre to try and prove that men and women are one and the same. Secondly, why are we trying to draw ourselves as such victims and men as such monsters? I strongly believe that youà ¡Ã ¯re only a victim if you allow yourself to be. And thirdly, somethingà ¡Ã ¯s given to us women by nature that men just donà ¡Ã ¯t possess. That is, to be a wife, and a mother - why deny it? Whatà ¡Ã ¯s wrong with having a man take care of a woman if thatà ¡Ã ¯s what she wants? How is that oppression? How is tha t inequality? I DO expect a man to open a door in front of me. I expect a man to pay for my dinner if it was he who asked me out in the first place. And ità ¡Ã ¯s pretty obvious that most feminists do hate men. The right wing of feminism makes me sick. Sure there are men out there that rape and hurt, but what about the women? Karla Tucker? But of course they argue that women are victims of men and that men deserve what they get. Well, I refuse to be a victim to anyone. I can stand on my own two feet, and I refuse to let anyone man or woman be supreme over my body or feelings. Those who say they are victims let themselves be the victim, and I feel nothing but p...

Holding Debates in Middle School Classes
Holding Debates in Middle School Classes Debates are wonderful, high-interest activities that can add great value to lessons for middle school students. They provide students with a change from the norm and allow them to learn and use new and different skills. They have the natural appeal of watching controlled disagreements while scoring points. Further, they are not very challenging to create. Here is a great guide explaining how to hold a class debate that shows how easy it can be if you plan ahead. Benefits of Debates One of the greatest benefits of using debates in class is that students will get to practice a number of important skills including: Learning about the topic assigned. Obviously, researching the topic involved provides students with more information than can be gleaned during in-class lessons. Further, by having to argue for or against a proposition, students have to dig deeper into a topic and look at it from both sides.Using important research skills as they prepare for the debate. Researching information is a learned skill. While many students will have been exposed to library use, encyclopedias, and Internet research during their elementary years, they will need to have these skills reinforced and expanded upon. Further, students will need to learn about ways to judge the validity and accuracy of web resources.Working together as a team both before and during the debate itself. Having students work together as they research and then perform the debate can help them learn important skills about cooperation and trust. Of course, as teachers, we have to have methods in place to ensure that all students are workin g. If one or more student is not pulling their weight, then the grades of the other team members should not be penalized. Practicing public speaking skills. Debates provide students with necessary practice for public speaking made easier by passionately arguing their point of view. This skill will be important for them the rest of their educational and possibly work career.Using critical thinking skills in a real world setting. Debates require students to think on their feet. When one team makes a valid point, the other team needs to be able to marshall their resources and come up with an effective response. Challenges for Middle School Teachers For these and other reasons, teachers often want to include debates in their lesson plans. However, implementing debates in middle school classes can sometimes be quite challenging. There are a number of reasons for this including: Varying maturity levels. Students in middle school are typically between the ages of 11 and 13. This is such a transitional period for students. Personal behavior and maintaining focus can be a challenge at times.Students may not have the necessary research skills. In many cases, students will not have had to research information in the way needed to do a good job in a class debate. Therefore, it is very important that you spend the time helping them prepare.Students may be self-conscious. Public speaking can be daunting. Having them act as a team can help. Creating Successful Debates Debates are a great part of a teachers repertoire of activities. However, there are a few caveats that must be remembered to make the debate successful. Pick your topic wisely, ensuring that it is acceptable for middle school students. Use the following list for great ideas in middle school debate topics.Publish your rubric before the debate. Your debate rubric helps students see how they will be graded.Consider holding a practice debate early in the year. This can be a fun debate where students learn the mechanics of the debate activity and can practice with a topic that they might already know a lot about.Figure out what you are going to do with the audience. You will probably want to keep your team down to about 2 to 4 students. Therefore, you will need to hold a number of debates in order to keep the grading consistent. At the same time, you will have the majority of your class watching as the audience. Give them something upon which they will be graded. You might have them fill out a sheet about each sides position. You might have them come up with and ask questions of each debate team. However, what you dont want is 4 to 8 stud ents involved in the debate and the rest of the class not paying attention and possibly causing distractions. Make sure that the debate does not become personal. There should be some basic ground rules established and understood. The debate should focus on the topic at hand and never on the people on the debate team. Make sure to build consequences into the debate rubric.
